White fires eight one-hit shutout innings to lead Skyhawks to win

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (February 27, 2011) – Junior lefthander Michael White (Lisbon, N.H./Lisbon Regional) faced one batter over the minimum in eight shutout innings of work to lead Stonehill College, among teams receiving votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II poll and ranked fourth in the organization's East Regional rankings, to a 2-0 victory over Chestnut Hill College to conclude play at the Ripken Experience Northeast Challenge this morning.

White, a member of the Tino Martinez Award Preseason "Watch List", was dominant in his first start on the mound this season (1-0) as he allowed just one hit over eight shutout innings of work, striking out ten and walking none for Stonehill. He faced one over the minimum in the outing after retiring the first 11 batters he faced before Chestnut Hill got a two-out single in the fourth that was

Senior righthander Brenden Shepard (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet) worked around a pair of hits in the ninth to earn his second save of the season, striking out one batter.

Junior Michael Magnussen (Carver, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy), who threw out the runner at second on Chestnut Hill's lone hit of the day, helped pace the Stonehill offense as he hit 2-for-4 with an RBI. Classmate Rich McHugh (Pembroke, Mass./Thayer Academy) was also 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Stonehill scored both runs in the game in the top of the eighth as senior Nick Nardacci (Bethlehem, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) led off with a single and advanced to second on a one out walk by classmate Angelo Bruno (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk). McHugh drove Nardacci in with an RBI single, before Magnussen capped the scoring with another RBI single to plate Bruno.

Stonehill (3-2, 0-0 NE-10) is off until its spring break trip when it opens with a non-conference doubleheader against Assumption College in Auburndale, Fla., starting at 4 p.m. The Skyhawks first home game is scheduled for Friday, March 25, when they host Post University for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
