Stonehill Splits on Opening Day in Myrtle Beach


Senior Alex McCormick fired six strong innings in his first start of the season on Friday.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (February 25, 2011) – Stonehill College, among teams receiving votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II poll and ranked fourth in the organization's East Regional poll, opened its 2011 season by splitting a pair of games at the Ripken Experience Northeast Challenge at The Ripken Experience – Myrtle Beach today. The Skyhawks opened the season with a 7-5 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan College before falling to Felician College, 9-1, in game two.

Six Stonehill batters had two hits and senior righthander Alex McCormick (Weymouth, Mass./Cardinal Spellman) opened with a strong start on the mound to lead the Skyhawks to the season-opening win.

McCormick (1-0) allowed just one earned run while scattering four hits and four walks over six innings with four strikeouts to pick up the win. Senior Brenden Shepard (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet) collected his first save of the season with 1.2 scoreless innings of work, yielding just a walk with no hits and two strikeouts to seal the win. He entered the game with runners on second and third and one out with Stonehill holding onto a two run lead, escaping the jam with a strikeout and fly out.

Senior Scott Hackett (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) led six Skyhawks with two hits as he finished 2-for-4 with a home run and two walks. Junior Rich McHugh (Pembroke, Mass./Thayer Academy) was 2-for-3 with a double, triple and two walks, while sophomore Michael Zeiner (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) hit 2-for-4 with a walk and two stolen bases. Senior Angelo Bruno (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) batted 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. Junior Michael White (Lisbon, N.H./Lisbon Regional) and senior Nick Nardacci (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) also collected two hits in the game.

Stonehill opened the scoring with a three run second as Bruno led off with a walk and scored on McHugh's triple. Junior Kyle Shepard (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet) drove in McHugh with a fielder's choice. Zeiner followed with a walk and scored on a triple by sophomore James DeAlto (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff).

West Virginia Wesleyan got a run back in the home half of the third, but Hackett homered in the fourth to get it right back for Stonehill. The Skyhawks went on to stake out a 7-1 lead before the Bobcats got back in the game with four in the bottom of the eighth.

Felician 9, Stonehill 1

Felician set the tone with four runs in the bottom of the first and didn't look back in handing Stonehill a 9-1 loss in game two today.

Angelo Bruno was 1-for-4 with a double and RBI to lead the Stonehill offense, knocking in the Skyhawks lone run in the eighth. James DeAlto hit 2-for-4 with a stolen base, while freshman Billy Karalis (Pawtucket, R.I./Bishop Feehan) finished 1-for-4 with a double for his first collegiate hit.

Junior lefthander Eric Haughn (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) took the loss (0-1) as he surrendered six runs, five earned, on six hits with four strikeouts over five innings on the mound for Stonehill. Classmate Brendan Wright (Easton, Mass./Cardinal Spellman) finished the game out for the Skyhawks, yielding three earned runs over the final three innings.

Stonehill (1-1, 0-0 NE-10) is back in action tomorrow when it faces Post University at 11 a.m., before a rematch with Felician at 2 p.m. The Skyhawks first home game isn't scheduled until Friday, March 25, when they host Post for a non-conference doubleheader at Lou Gorman Field starting at 1 p.m.
