Skyhawks Get 10th Inning 10-9 Win
Easton, Mass. - Stonehill took advantage of 14 walks by Saint Rose pitchers to rally for a tenth-inning 10-9 victory over the visiting Golden Knights on Friday afternoon on Lou Gorman Field.
With the win, the Skyhawks improve to 18-14 overall and 10-8 in Northeast-10 action, while Saint Rose dips to 14-20 overall and 9-10 in league play.
The wildness for the Golden Knights started in the first inning when starter Daniel Cavazzini walked four of his nine batters in the bottom of the first, staking Stonehill to an early 2-0 lead.
Saint Rose cut that lead in half when Michael Carbone tripled to right center field off Skyhawk starter Matt Olsen (Winchester, Mass.) and came around to score on a groundout by Ryan Price.
The Golden Knights then scored two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-2 lead into the sixth.
Then in the bottom of the seventh, Stonehill erupted for four runs on four hits highlighted by Angelo Bruno's (Norwalk, Conn.) double to the base of the wall in centerfield. Stonehill's other runs came on a wild pitch and a RBI singles from Michael White (Lisbon, N.H.) and Kyle Shepard (Boxford, Mass.).
Saint Rose grabbed the lead again, this time off of reliever Dan Corrigan (Portsmouth, R.I.) who allowed a two-run triple to Jesse Burba before yielding to Matt Giusti (Hopkinton, Mass.).
The Skyhawks reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the eighth when Bruno doubled down the left field line scoring Nick Nardacci (Bethlehem, N.Y.) and then he came around to score on a base hit by Thomas Marino (Garden City, N.Y.).
After a walk and two quick outs in the top of the ninth put a runner on second, a fielding error allowed the game tying run to score.
Each team went scoreless in their next at-bats, and the Golden Knights fifth pitcher of the day, Emilo LaPietra recorded two outs when the Skyhawks made their rally.
Marino singled to left, then Giusti coaxed a walk putting runners on first and second. Shepard then came through with the game-winning hit - a single to left that plated Marino.
Giusti, who pitched 2.2 innings of one-hit relief picks up his fourth win of the season. Meanwhile the hitting stars for Stonehill were Bruno (2-for-5, two doubles, three RBI) and Shepard, who had a career-high three hits in six at-bats.
The Skyhawks return to action with a non-league doubleheader against Saint Michael's beginning at 1:00 p.m.
