Skyhawks Exact Revenge On Penmen, Post 6-4 Win
Easton, Mass. - Sophomore Shane Penzone (Hudson, Mass.) tossed five innings of effective relief to help lift host Stonehill to a 6-4 win over visiting Southern New Hampshire on Friday afternoon on Lou Gorman Field in Northeast-10 baseball action.
With the win, the Skyhawks remain in the thick of the Northeast-10 Postseason Tournament hunt at 21-16 and 11-10 in league play, while the Penmen drop to 13-22-1, and 10-14-1 in Northeast-10 action.
Stonehill scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly from Ryan Healey (Lynn, Mass.).
The Skyhawks added to their lead in the second when Thomas Marino tripled to right field after SNHU's outfielder lost the ball in the sun. He scored on a wild pitch, upping the score to 2-0.
SNHU trimmed the lead in half with a single run in the fourth off of starter Nick Peters (Newton, Mass.), but Stonehill answered right back with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame on an RBI double by Mitch Davis (Bow, N.H.).
Freshman Michael White (Lisbon, N.H.) broke the game open with a three-run double down the right field line - a hit that shattered his bat and gave the Skyhawks a 6-1 lead.
The Penmen clawed back, getting three runs in the top of the ninth to make things interesting. Freshman Kyle Shepard (Boxford, Mass.) relieved Penzone, and immediately found himself in a bases loaded one-out situation. A single and a pair of walks made the score 6-4 and put the winning run at first. Shepard, however, was able to strike out the final Southern New Hampshire batter to preserve the win.
Davis and Nate Weber (Hanson, Mass.) each had two hits for the Skyhawks, while no Penmen recorded more than one hit.
Steve Golbranson (Abington, Mass.) took the loss for Southern New Hampshire, giving up six hits and three runs (two earned) in 5.2 innings.
Penzone, meanwhile, improved to 3-1 with the victory and Shepard collected his first collegiate save.
Stonehill returns to action on Saturday with a critical doubleheader against Southern Connecticut. Game time is scheduled for noon at Lou Gorman Field.
