First Inning Dooms Skyhawks In 4-3 Loss
Manchester, N.H. - Southern New Hampshire raced out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first and held on for a 4-3 victory over visiting Stonehill on Thursday afternoon at Penmen Field in Northeast-10 baseball action.
SNHU collected four of their 12 hits in the decisive inning with Eric Pelletier proving a big blow with an RBI triple that scored the game's first run. Also joining in with an RBI in the first was Richard Pecoraro, who went 4-for-4 on the day.
Penmen hurler Ryan Quinn kept the Skyhawk bats at bay for most of the day, going eight innings, scattering eight hits and striking out eight.
With the score 3-0 in the top of the fourth, Ryan Healey (Lynn, Mass.) singled to center and then Angelo Bruno (Norwalk, Conn.) blasted his third home run of the season to trim the Southern New Hampshire lead to 3-2.
After allowing the first two batters of the sixth inning to reach base, Stonehill starter Eric Haughn (Pembroke, Mass.) was replaced by Alex McCormick (South Weymouth, Mass.), who got out of the inning yielding just one run on a fielder's choice.
The Skyhawks got the one run back in the eighth when Bruno doubled with one out and came around to score on a single to center by Shane Franz (Cazenovia, N.Y.).
SNHU reliever Brad Monroe got Stonehill in order in the top of the ninth to pick up his first save of the season and secure Quinn's fourth victory. Haughn took the loss for the Skyhawks, going five-plus innings while giving up nine hits and all four Penmen runs.
In addition to Bruno, Healey also had two hits in four at-bats, while Mitch Davis (Bow, N.H.), Scott Hackett (Bangor, Maine) and Michael White (Lisbon, N.H.) had Stonehill's other hits.
Now 20-16 overall and 10-10 in the Northeast-10, the Skyhawks will host Southern New Hampshire of Friday at Lou Gorman Field beginning at 3:30 p.m.
