Skyhawks Drop Season Opener
Winter Park, Fla.
- The Skyhawks held Rollins to just one run over
the first three innings, but couldn't muster any offense as the
Tars exploded for 11 runs in the final six innings on their way to
12-0 win Saturday evening under the lights at Almond Stadium.
Stonehill was held to just six hits in their first outing of the
season, while Rollins racked up 15 hits to improve to 11-6.
Stonehill starter Nick Peters (Newton, Mass.) was
dealt the loss after giving up five runs, one earned, in 3.2
innings of work. Freshmen Matt Olson
(Winchester, Mass.), Greg Marakovits (Rocky Hill,
Conn.) and Michael Von Stein (Trumbull, Conn.),
each making their first appearance in a Skyhawk uniform, finished
up the contest for Stonehill.
Rollins was unable to get its bats going early as they were held
scoreless for the first two innings. In the third, the Tars
broke the scoreless tie when Ferguson reached on a walk and scored
on the Bennett double.
From that point on it would be all Tars as they scored in every
inning.
With a 1-0 advantage, the Tars received four runs in the bottom of
the fourth after registering one hit and capitalizing on a
Stonehill error. The Skyhawks looked like they might be able
to get out of the inning with a man on third and two outs, but
Rollins mounted a four run, two out rally for the 5-0 advantage
after four inning.
The Skyhawks best opportunity of the evening came in the fifth as
Angelo Bruno (Norwalk, Conn.) singled to open the
inning and Ryan Healey (Lynn, Mass.) advanced him
to second on a single of his own. However, Healey was picked
off at first and the final two batters of the inning were unable
get move the runner over.
Rollins added a run in the fifth before tacking on a pair of runs
in the sixth, including a two-run homer. After adding another lone
run in the seventh, The Tars scored three more times in the
eighth.
In the ninth, Nate Weber (Hanson, Mass.) hit double to the right field gap with one out, but he was stranded at third as the final two batters both grounded out to short.
The Skyhawks, who were playing their first game, dropped to 0-l. Stonehill returns to action on Saturday as they travel to take on Florida Tech in Melbourne, Florida.
