Giusti Gem Snaps Stonehill Losing Streak
Easton, Mass. - In the final start of his college career, senior hurdler Matt Giusti (Hopkinton, Mass.) went out in style, holding New Haven without a hit through the first four innings, leading the Skyhawks to a 4-1 win over the Chargers and snapping the team's six game losing streak.
Giusti struck out two and allowed just five hits while giving up an unearned run in the sixth to improve to 5-2 on the season. On offense, first baseman Angelo Bruno (Norwalk, Conn.) went 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Freshman Michael White (Lisbon, N.H.) also had two hits and added an RBI as well.
In the second the Skyhawks gave Giusti all the offense he would need, scoring two runs in the bottom of the frame. Junior Ryan Healey (Lynn, Mass.) doubled to lead off the inning and Bruno reached on a bunt single and moved Healey to second. Shane Franz (Cazenovia, N.Y.) followed with a single through the left to score Healy and Bruno scored on a base knock by White.
An inning later Stonehill upped their lead to 3-0 as Nate Weber (Hanson, Mass.) ripped a two out double to left and came around to score on a Healey single.
Giusti continued to keep the New Haven bats at bay, allowing one hit in the fifth and two more in the sixth, though no runner got past second base. In the bottom of the sixth, Bruno homered to center to lead off the inning, stretching the Skyhawks lead to 4-1.
In the eighth, Giusti allowed a one out single to Kyle Pettoruto. Pettoruto reached second on a passed ball and came around to score on a two out single to make it 4-1. However, the senior finished off the Chargers in the ninth for his sixth complete game of the season.
The win give Giusti 19 for his career, putting him in a tie for third place on school's all-time win list. Kyle Bombace took the loss for New Haven.
Stonehill finishes up their season on Sunday when they host St. Anselm for a double header beginning at noon.
