Dominant Pitching Leads Skyhawks Past Falcons 4-0
Waltham, Mass. -The pitching combination of freshman Eric Haughn (Pembroke, Mass.) and sophomore Dan Corrigan (Portsmouth, R.I.) threw nine scoreless innings of four hit ball as Stonehill shutout Bentley for the second consecutive day, this one 4-0 on Wednesday afternoon at DeFelice Field.
Haughn started the game and went the first 6.2 innings, giving up just four hits and allowing just one runner to reach third on the way to his first collegiate victory. Corrigan was equally impressive, tossing a perfect 2.1 innings in relief. Sophomore Scott Hackett (Bangor, Maine) led the Skyhawks at the plate, going 2-4 while driving in one and scoring another.
The game was scoreless until the third when Stonehill erupted for four runs. Nick Nardacci (Glenmont, N.Y.) led the inning off with a single and scored two batters later on a Mitch Davis (Bow, N.H.) single to left field.
Kyle Shepard (Boxford, Mass.), who had been hit by a pitch, reached second on the Davis hit and scored on a Hackett single to left field. Davis then scored on a wild pitch by Dupay and the Skyhawks scored their final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Healey (Lynn, Mass.).
In the bottom of the inning, the Falcons hit two singles to open up the inning putting runners on first and second with no outs. Haughn however was able to induce two consecutive flyouts and a groundout to end inning.
The Skyhawks threatened to score in the fourth as Tom Marino (Garden City, N.Y.) was thrown out at home and again in the seventh as Davis reached third before a strikeout ended the scoring chance.
In the bottom of the seventh Bentley put runners on first and second with one out to chase Haughn, but Corrigan came in and shut the door, pitching a perfect 2.1 innings to earn his second save of the year.
With the win Stonehill pushes their win streak to three games and improves to 11-11 overall and 4-5 in NE-10 play.
The Skyhawks return to action on Friday when they host Bentley at Lou Gorman Field at 3:30 p.m.
