Greyhounds Capitalize On Errors, Beat Skyhawks 10-4
Easton, Mass. - Stonehill committed two costly errors which led to seven runs and let an early lead slip away, losing to Assumption 10-4 in their home opener at Lou Gorman Field on a windy Sunday afternoon.
Senior leftfielder Nate Weber (Hanson, Mass.) was 3-4 for the Skyhawks with two runs scored and an RBI while second baseman Mitch Davis (Bow, N.H.) also had a multi hit game, with two base knocks.
After the Greyhounds went down in order in the first inning, Davis led off with a single to left field. Two batters later, senior Weber singled home Davis and advanced all the way to third on the throw home. Weber scored the Skyhawks final run of the inning on Javier Guzman's (San Juan, P.R.) groundout to the shortstop for the 2-0 lead.
In the top of the second, sophomore Nick Peters (Newton, Mass.) retired the first two batters before issuing a walk to Mike Foley. Foley then scored on a double by Josh Defresne to cut the Stonehill lead in half. Peters walked the next batter before getting a groundout to end the inning.
No one scored again until Mike Di Reda homered to right center to lead off the top of the fourth and tie the game at two apiece. In the bottom of the inning with one out junior Ryan Healey (Lynn, Mass.) returned the favor, as he sent a shot over the fence in right field for the 3-2 lead.
Assumption chased Peters in the top of the fifth, putting runners on first and second with two out. Freshman Eric Haughn (Pembroke, Mass.) came in and the first batter he faced reached on a throwing error by Guzman and also allowed the runner from third to score. The freshman gave up consecutive singles, allowed a walk and gave up a bases loaded double as six Greyhound runners crossed the plate before a flyout to left field ended the inning.
The Skyhawks got a runner on in the bottom of the inning with one out, but a double play ended any scoring threat. Assumption meanwhile extended their lead to 9-3 on a double that scored Derek Migrants in the top of the sixth.
Both teams went down 1-2-3 over the next inning and half, until a single by Migrants drove home a run with two outs in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the frame, Weber doubled with two outs and Guzman drove him home on a double of his own to cut the lead to 10-4. However, a popup to the second baseman by Healey ended any two out rally and was the last run for either team.
The loss drops Stonehill to 7-9 and 0-3 in NE-10 play. The team returns to action on Tuesday when the travel to take on UMass-Lowell at 3:30 p.m.
