Skyhawks Drop Season Opener, 15-5 Boxscore

Senior Matt Orr had two hits and an RBI in the season-opening loss to Concordia.

Ft. Myers, Fla. - Concordia (Minn.) scored ten unanswered runs in the final five innings to break open a 5-5 game and take a 15-5 win in the season opener for the 2008 edition of  Stonehill baseball at the gene Cusic Classic in Ft. Myers, Fla.

The Golden Bears jumped out to an early four run lead in the bottom of the first inning, manufacturing the runs without an extra base hit in the inning, drawing two walks, a hit by pitch and producing three singles.

The Skyhawks got on the board in the top of the third, when after two walks and a groundout, Nate Weber (Hanson, Mass.) doubled down the left field line to drive in two. Weber then came around to score on two passed balls by Concordia starter Chris Kimpton.

After an error and a double had Golden bear runners at second and third with one out in the home half of the third, Stonehill starter Joe Goodwin (Norwood, Mass.), allowed only one more run in the frame to keep the Skyhawks close at 5-3.

The Purple and White evened the score in top of the fourth with back-to-back hits - a double to center from Shane Franz (Cazenovia, N.Y.) and a single from Matt Orr (Wilton, Conn.). Orr eventually came around to score on two Concordia errors, to even the score at 5-5.

The Golden Bears immediately tacked on two more runs in each of the following two innings, highlighted by a two-run homer from Joe Abellera in the bottom of the fourth.

They then added one in the seventh and then five in the eighth for the final margin.

Offensively for the Skyhawks, Mitch Davis (Bow, N.H.) had two hits as did Franz and Orr.

Goodwin (0-1) took the loss for Stonehill, going four innings and allowing six hits and seven runs, six of them earned.

The Skyhawks return to action on Saturday for a doubleheader versus Wheeling (W. Va.) Jesuit beginning at 9 a.m.
