Springfield, Mass. - Stonehill got six strong innings from senior Nick SantaBarbara (Middleton, Mass.) and three more from classmate Mat Lindenmayer (Penfield, N.Y.) as the Skyhawks opened Northeast-10 portion of their 2008 slate with a 5-2 win over host American International on Saturday afternoon.
A scheduled doubleheader turned into a single game because of field conditions, but the delay didn't seem to bother either of the Stonehill pitchers who took the mound.
SantaBarbara yielded two runs, scattering eight hits, while Lindenmayer gave up two hits in his three innings of work to collect the save.
After the Yellow Jackets picked up a run in the bottom of the first, Stonehill took advantage of two walks by American International starter Nick Noblit in the top of the third. With two outs, Noblit walked Javier Guzman (San Juan, P.R.) and Nate Weber (Hanson, Mass.) and Brenden Shepard (Boxford, Mass.) followed with an RBI single. More Noblit wildness gave the Skyhawks the lead when two wild pitches scored Weber.
A double and a single in the bottom of the fourth tied the game at 2-2, but Stonehill responded with two runs in the sixth without registering a hit.
Two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases and Matt Orr (Wilton, Conn.) picked up an RBI when new Yellow Jacket pitcher, Dilion Fontaine, hit Orr forcing home a run. A Mitch Davis (Bow, N.H.) fielder's choice brought home another Stonehill run before a pair of strikeouts finally ended the inning.
The Skyhawks tacked on another score when freshman Angelo Bruno (Norwalk, Conn.) led off the eighth with a walk. Davis reached on an error and Guzman singled home the final run of the game.
Despite mustering only four hits, Stonehill turned three double plays, including a key twin killing in the bottom of the eighth.
Bruno was on base four times for the Skyhawks with three walks and a double, while Guzman, Weber and Shepard all recorded hits.
Stonehill, now 9-6 overall, will return to action on Monday with another meeting with the Yellow Jackets.
