FINAL: STONEHILL 6, GANNON 5 (10 INNINGS)
FORT MYERS, Fla.-- Sophomore Nate Weber (Hanson, Mass.) capped a career-high four RBI performance with a game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th to lift Stonehill to a 6-5 season-opening non-league victory over Gannon in opening round play of the 2007 Gene Cusic Classic Friday evening at Terry Park.
Weber plated freshman Rob Von Stein (Trumbull, Conn.) with the game-winning run for the Skyhawks, who trailed 4-0 heading into the late innings. Senior Max Vigliotti's (Stamford, Conn.) two-run homer in the sixth enabled Stonehill to climb back to within 4-2, and Weber's three-run shot in the bottom of the eighth gave the Skyhawks a 5-4 lead. The Golden Knights pushed across a run in the top of the ninth on a bases-loaded walk, setting up Weber's heroics in the extra frame.
Senior Matt Vaughn (Bow, N.H.) picked up the win in relief for Stonehill, which was buoyed by a combined 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief from sophomore Pat Tobin (Centerville, Mass.) and senior Chris Herrmann (Chelmsford, Mass.).
The Skyhawks continue play at the Gene Cusic Classic on Saturday afternoon with a pair of non-league outings against Hillsdale at Noon and Saginaw Valley State at 4:00 p.m.
