NEW HAVEN, Conn.-- Sophomore Billy Hite (Shelton, Conn.) cracked a three-run triple to back seven solid innings on the mound by senior Matt Hennessey (Wallingford, Conn.) that lifted Southern Connecticut to a 6-1 Northeast-10 Conference baseball victory over Stonehill and a split of a home-and-home set Friday afternoon at The Ballpark at Southern.

Hite's three-bagger in the third gave the host Owls (27-15, 16-9 Northeast-10) all the runs they would need, as Southern Connecticut added two more in the fifth on an RBI double by junior Jose Ortiz (Waterbury, Conn.) and a sacrifice fly by junior Nick Czekaj (Branford, Conn.) to take a 5-0 lead. The visiting Skyhawks (27-14, 21-6 Northeast-10), who saw their four-game winning streak come to an end, plated their lone run in the sixth when senior Coley Lyons (West Roxbury, Mass.) scored on an error, and the hosts closed out the scoring with an unearned run in the seventh on a wild pitch.

Ortiz and sophomore Joe Kahlden (Norwalk, Conn.) each had two hits as part of an eight hit attack for Southern Connecticut, as Hennessey allowed the unearned run and fanned six over seven innings to improve to 6-3 on the mound for the Owls. Junior Max Vigliotti (Stamford, Conn.) collected two of Stonehill's eight hits in the setback, including his 10th double of the season, while senior Brian Nelson (Greenville, R.I.) allowed six hits and five runs over four-plus innings in suffering his first setback in five decisions.

Stonehill hosts UMass Lowell in a key Northeast-10 doubleheader on Saturday morning at Gorman Field beginning at 11:00 a.m., while Southern Connecticut heads to Worcester, Mass. to take on Assumption in a Northeast-10 twinbill that begins at Noon.
