LOWELL, Mass.-- Sophomore Nick SantaBarbara (Middleton, Mass.) scattered nine hits over eight innings while striking out six to pick up his third win of the season on the mound as Stonehill gained a split of a Northeast-10 Conference baseball doubleheader with UMass Lowell by posting a 5-2 nightcap triumph in contests played at LeLacheur Park. The host River Hawks prevailed in the opener by a 4-2 final.

After spotting UMass Lowell a run and four hits in the opening frame, SantaBarbara settled down to allow just five hits over his final seven innings of work to improve to 3-0 on the year for the visiting Chieftains (8-6, 2-2 Northeast-10), as Stonehill got all of the runs it would need with a five-run outburst in the fourth that was keyed by a two-out, three-run double by senior Craig Audette (Raynham, Mass.). Senior Tim Flynn (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and sophomore Max Vigliotti (Stamford, Conn.) chipped in with an RBI double and single, respectively, in the frame for the visitors, as the duo each had two hits in the nightcap triumph as part of an eight-hit Stonehill attack. Junior Brian Nelson (Greenville, R.I.) pitched a perfect ninth for the Chieftains, as he struck out two to collect his third save of the season and has now fanned 13 in just 8 1/3 innings of work this spring.

Senior Miles Page (Dracut, Mass.) and sophomore Patrick Wilson (Dracut, Mass.) each collected two hits in the nightcap setback for the host River Hawks (10-5, 4-2 Northeast-10), as sophomore Ryan Davenport (Fitchburg, Mass.) drove in the lone run for UMass Lowell. Senior Brad Laurin (Dracut, Mass.) allowed seven hits and just one earned run in five innings of work to fall to 1-2 on the mound for the hosts.

In the opener, sophomore Pete Nickerson (Dracut, Mass.) allowed just three hits and struck out seven to improve to 3-0 on the hill for UMass Lowell, as the River Hawks used single runs in the first and fifth innings as well as a pair of tallies in the second to take a 4-0 cushion into the final frame. Senior Nate Liebenow (Hampton, N.H.) and freshman Tim Manton (Swansea, Mass.) each had two hits in the opener for the hosts, as Liebenow drove in a pair of runs and sophomore Sean Patno (Chelmsford, Mass.) drove in a run as well for UMass Lowell.

Stonehill plated a pair of runs in the ninth and had runners at the corners with two outs but go no closer, as Vigliotti doubled in the first Chieftain run and sophomore Tom Aldrich (New Canaan, Conn.) added a run-scoring single for the visitors, who received two hits off the bat of Vigliotti in the contest. Senior Matt Mitchell (West Roxbury, Mass.) allowed just one earned run over six innings of work, as Stonehill hurt itself with five errors in the setback.

Stonehill's three-game Northeast-10 weekend set with Merrimack that was to be played in North Andover, Mass. on both Saturday and Sunday has already been postponed due to unplayable field conditions and the impending weather. The Chieftains are scheduled to return to action on Monday afternoon by heading to Waltham, Mass. to take on Bentley in a Northeast-10 outing that begins at 3:30 p.m.
