NEW HAVEN, Conn.-- Junior Matt Hennessey (Wallingford, Conn.) scattered four hits and struck out five in going the distance for his sixth victory of the season as 25th-ranked Southern Connecticut posted a 3-1 Northeast-10 Conference baseball victory over Stonehill Friday afternoon at Owls Ballpark.

The host Owls (27-10, 24-5 Northeast-10) took the rubber game of the three-game set between the two squads, as Southern Connecticut jumped out to a 2-0 lead in its first two at-bats on an error and a suicide squeeze by junior Steve Gatewood (Franklin, Mass.). The hosts extended their lead to 3-0 in the fifth on a second error, as the visiting Chieftains (23-17, 16-12 Northeast-10) plated their lone tally in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by freshman Ryan Halloran (Tyngsboro, Mass.) to close out the scoring.

Seniors Tyler Call (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Mel Davis (Bristol, Conn.), along with sophomore Sean Morgan (Maynard, Mass.), each collected two hits as part of an 11-hit Southern Connecticut attack, while senior Tim Flynn (Clifton Park, N.Y.) accounted for half of Stonehill’s four hits on the day with a pair of safeties.

Hennessey overcame five walks in his win on the mound for the Owls, who turned a pair of double plays on the afternoon, while senior Billy McLane (Plymouth, N.H.) allowed just one earned run and fanned one in going the distance on the mound for the Chieftains in falling to 6-4 on the spring.

Stonehill’s scheduled Northeast-10 doubleheader with Assumption that was to have been played on Sunday afternoon in Worcester, Mass. at Noon has already been postponed by the impending inclement weather, as the Chieftains and Greyhounds will make-up that twinbill on Tuesday afternoon beginning at 2:00 p.m. Southern Connecticut wraps up regular season play on Sunday afternoon by hosting Pace in a Northeast-10 outing that begins at 1:00 p.m. at Owls Ballpark.
