FORT MYERS, Fla.-- The Stonehill baseball team began its 2005 season on Friday evening by dropping a non-league doubleheader to 24th-ranked Slippery Rock by scores of 2-1 in the opener and 12-2 in the nightcap in play at the Gene Cusic Classic at Terry Park.

Junior Dean Chiusano (Clifton Park, N.Y.) was a tough-luck loser on the mound in the opener for the Chieftains (0-2), as he allowed just four hits and two runs while striking out six in five innings of work. The Rock (2-0) took a 2-0 lead into the sixth before Stonehill sliced its deficit in half on a sacrifice fly by junior Coley Lyons (West Roxbury, Mass.), but the Chieftains could come no closer. Sophomore Max Vigliotti (Stamford, Conn.) went 2-for-3 in the opener to collect half of Stonehill’s hit total.

Slippery Rock used eight third inning runs to overcome an early 1-0 Chieftain advantage, as Stonehill received RBI’s from Lyons and junior T.J. Piscatelli (Norfolk, Mass.). Senior Craig Audette (Raynham, Mass.) scored both of the Chieftain runs in the second game setback, as senior Matt Mitchell (West Roxbury, Mass.) went 2 2/3 innings on the mound in taking the loss.

Stonehill continues play at the Gene Cusic Classic on Saturday afternoon as the Chieftains square off with LIU-C.W. Post in a non-league contest at Terry Park that begins at Noon.
