Sittig Becomes Stonehill's Second All-America Baseball Performer, Will Join Flynn At New England Intercollegiate All-Star Game At Fenway Park Sunday Evening

May 30, 2005

Stonehill College junior righthander Billy Sittig was named earlier today to the 2005 Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association Division II All-America team, as he earned a spot on the third team All-America squad after earning the nod as the 2005 ABCA Northeast Regional Pitcher of the Year.

A native of West Roxbury, Mass. and a graduate of Catholic Memorial High School, Sittig becomes the second All-America performer in Chieftain history, joining former Stonehill standout Junior Medina ’02, who earned first team Rawlings/ABCA accolades following his senior season in 2002. Sittig posted a 9-2 mark on the mound for Head Coach Patrick Boen’s squad this spring with a 2.16 earned run average, as his win total was the second highest single-season mark in school history. In 12 total appearances in 2005 (11 starts), Sittig allowed just 57 hits in 83 1/3 innings of work while striking out 90 (an average of 9.72 per nine innings), as he tossed three complete games and held opponents to a .195 batting average.

Sittig was named as the 2005 Northeast-10 Conference Pitcher of the Year while also earning first team all-league honors, and both he and senior teammate Tim Flynn (Clifton Park, N.Y./Albany Academy) will represent Stonehill at the 2005 New England Intercollegiate All-Star Game on Sunday, June 5th at Fenway Park immediately following the contest between the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Sittig will be making his second appearance in the All-Star Game in three seasons, as he picked up the win for the College Division All-Stars during the 2003 contest played at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, R.I.

Flynn joined Sittig in earning first-team all-Northeast-10 and ABCA All-Northeast Regional honors this spring, as he led the Chieftains at the plate with a .347 batting average that included a team-best 61 hits, a statistic made even more impressive given the fact that 35 of Flynn’s 47 games came with wooden bats. Flynn, a three-time first-team all-conference selection, rapped out 11 doubles, a pair of homers and drove in 27 runs, as he also scored 31 runs and recorded 14 stolen bases. Flynn also recorded six outfield assists from his centerfield position and holds the Stonehill career record with 18 outfield assists.

Stonehill posted an overall mark of 27-20 under Boen this spring, marking the fifth time in six seasons that the Chieftains have recorded 27 or more wins. Stonehill also posted a 17-13 Northeast-10 record that was good for third place, as the Chieftains advanced to the championship game of the conference tournament for the third time in six years.
