TROY, N.Y.-- Senior Craig Audette’s (Raynham, Mass.) RBI single in the top of the 10th sparked a five-run rally that lifted Stonehill to a 10-5 nightcap victory and a sweep of a Northeast-10 Conference baseball doubleheader from Saint Rose on Saturday afternoon at Joe Bruno Stadium. The Chieftains took the opener by a 2-1 final on the strength of a complete-game three-hitter by senior Billy McLane (Plymouth, N.H.).

The visiting Chieftains (14-7, 8-3 Northeast-10), winners of three straight and seven of their last eight outings, took a 5-0 lead into the late innings of the nightcap before the host Golden Knights (11-14, 2-5 Northeast-10) used a four-run seventh to close to within one and forced extra frames with a run in the ninth to tie the game at 5-5. Sophomore Adam Pardo (Hanover, Mass.) led off the 10th with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball before scoring the go-ahead run on Audette’s one-out single, and the Chieftains took advantage of an RBI double by junior Coley Lyons (West Roxbury, Mass.) and a run-scoring single off the bat of freshman Ryan Halloran (Tyngsboro, Mass.) as well as a second passed ball and wild pitch to cap the five-run outburst.

Audette rapped out three of Stonehill’s 16 hits in the nightcap triumph, as Lyons had a pair of hits and drove in three runs for the Chieftains, who also received two hits and a pair of RBI of sophomore Max Vigliotti (Stamford, Conn.) as well as two hits each from Halloran, junior Sean Lawrence (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and freshman David Fradette (Goffstown, N.H.). Junior Brian Nelson (Greenville, R.I.) pitched 3 1/3 innings of relief to earn the win on the mound for Stonehill, as senior Matt Mitchell (West Roxbury, Mass.) allowed three hits and two runs while fanning four over 6 1/3 innings for the visitors.

Freshman Casey Deuel (Queensbury, N.Y.) collected three of Saint Rose’s 10 hits in the second outing, as senior William Whitty (Lake George, N.Y.), the third of four Golden Knight pitchers in the nightcap, took the loss on the mound, allowing six hits and two earned runs in four-plus innings of relief.

McLane was masterful on the mound for Stonehill in the opener, as he recorded 12 ground ball outs and struck out five in scattering three hits to improve to 4-1 on the season. The Chieftains plated both of their runs in the third inning on an RBI single by Lawrence and a run-scoring double off the bat of Lyons, and Saint Rose sliced its deficit in half in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by junior John Marcella (Schenectady, N.Y.) but got no closer.

Five different Chieftains collected hits in the opening game triumph, while three different Golden Knights notched hits as well in the first contest, as McLane outdueled Saint Rose sophomore Dane Cory (Queensbury, N.Y.), who allowed just five hits and a pair of runs in taking the loss on the mound for the hosts.

Stonehill and Saint Rose wrap up their three-game Northeast-10 weekend set on Sunday afternoon at Spillane Field in Wareham, Mass. beginning at 1:00 p.m.
