FORT MYERS, Fla.-- The Stonehill baseball team continued play at the Gene Cusic Classic on Monday after by splitting a non-league doubleheader with New Haven, as the Chieftains took the opener by a 12-8 final before the Chargers grabbed a 6-3 decision in the nightcap in games played at Cape Coral Field.

The two teams battled to a 5-5 tie through three innings of the opener before Stonehill (3-3) took the lead for good with four runs in the fourth, which was highlighted by a two-run triple off the bat of sophomore Max Vigliotti (Stamford, Conn.) that followed a key error that led to a pair of unearned runs. The Chargers (1-3) answered back with two in the fifth to close to within 9-7, but Stonehill added three insurance tallies in the fifth and sixth frames, including a pair of RBI singles off the bat of senior Craig Audette (Raynham, Mass.) to post its triumph.

Audette went 3-for-4 in the opening game win for Stonehill, which also received two RBI each from juniors Sean Lawrence (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and T.J. Piscatelli (Norfolk, Mass.), as Lawrence, Piscatelli and sophomore Adam Pardo (Hanover, Mass.) each belted homers in the contest for the Chieftains. Junior Kyle Davis (Gibbstown, N.J.) went 4-for-5 with five RBI, including a grand slam, in the setback for New Haven, which also received homers off the bats of senior Greg Stanis (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) and freshman Michael Moras (Orange, Conn.).

Sophomore Nick SantaBarbara (Middleton, Mass.) picked up the win on the mound in the opener for Stonehill, as he scattered eight hits and struck out five, while junior Brian Nelson (Greenville, R.I.) came on to get the final four outs (two via strikeout) for his first save of the spring. Junior Scott Wardell (Tabernacle, N.J.) allowed nine runs (five earned) in four innings of work to take the setback on the mound for New Haven.

In the nightcap, the Chargers scored twice in both the third and fourth frames to take a 4-0 lead on the strength of a two-run homer by Stanis and a two-run double by freshman Chad Lemos (North Dartmouth, Mass.) before the Chieftains got a single run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by senior Tim Flynn (Clifton Park, N.Y.). New Haven added two more in the bottom of the frame on RBI singles by Moras and senior Ed Coulombe (Goffstown, N.H.), and Stonehill closed out the scoring in the sixth on an RBI double by sophomore Blake Marston (Concord, N.H.) and an RBI single by sophomore Matt Vaughn (Bow, N.H.).

Moras had two of New Haven’s eight hits in its nightcap triumph, as junior Bill Demarco (Turnersville, N.J.) allowed three runs and fanned seven over 5 1/3 innings to pick up the win for the Chargers. Junior Jim O’Malia (Larksville, Pa.) got the final five outs to earn the save for New Haven in its first victory in four contests this season.

Marston went 3-for-3 in the nightcap setback for Stonehill, which also received two hits and a pair of stolen bases from junior Coley Lyons (West Roxbury, Mass.). Junior Joe Breen (Swampscott, Mass.) took the loss on the mound for the Chieftains, allowing seven hits and striking out six in 4 2/3 innings of work.

Stonehill squares off with Bloomsburg in a non-league doubleheader at the Gene Cusic Classic on Wednesday afternoon beginning at 4:00 p.m., while New Haven takes on Oakland City in a non-league contest on Tuesday afternoon at Noon.
