Sittig Named As 2005 Northeast-10 Baseball Pitcher Of Year, Joins Flynn, Lyons And SantaBarbara On All-Conference Team

May 18, 2005

Stonehill College junior righthander Billy Sittig has been named as the 2005 Northeast-10 Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Year in a vote of the league’s coaches, as he joins three of his Chieftain teammates in earning spots on the 2005 Northeast-10 all-conference squad.

A native of West Roxbury, Mass. and a graduate of Catholic Memorial High School, Sittig posted a 9-2 record with a 2.16 earned run average, as he struck out 90 in 83 1/3 innings of work on the mound for Head Coach Patrick Boen’s crew this spring, an average of 9.72 strikeouts per nine innings of work. Sittig’s season victory total represented the second highest single-season win mark in Stonehill history, as he trails only former Chieftain standout Mark Langone’s mark of 10 triumphs in 2000. Sittig began the year with five straight victories and tossed a one-hitter while fanning nine in eight innings of work in a 5-0 victory over Saint Anselm in the opening round of the Northeast-10 championships. Billy also tossed a complete-game two-hit shutout in a 4-0 win over Merrimack on April 4th.

Sittig was joined on the first-team all-Northeast-10 squad by senior outfielder Tim Flynn (Clifton Park, N.Y./Albany Academy), who earned all-conference accolades for the third straight season. Flynn, who finished eighth on Stonehill’s career hits list with 148 safeties, led the Chieftains at the plate this spring with a .347 batting average that included a team-leading 61 hits to go with 11 doubles, one triple, two home runs and 27 RBI. Flynn also recorded 14 stolen bases on the years and led all Stonehill outfielders with six assists, setting a career record in the process with 18 outfield assists.

Junior Coley Lyons (West Roxbury, Mass./Catholic Memorial) and sophomore Nick SantaBarbara (Middleton, Mass./Masconomet) each earned spots on the third-team all-Northeast-10 squad for their efforts this season. Lyons ranked second to Flynn in the team batting race with a .331 average, as he amassed 59 hits (including a team-best 15 doubles) while driving in 26 runs and recording 15 stolen bases. SantaBarbara was 8-2 on the mound for the Chieftains this spring with a 3.09 earned run average, as he fanned 53 in 78 2/3 innings of work and was part of three shutouts on the year. Two of SantaBarbara’s triumphs came over 2005 NCAA tournament participants UMass Lowell (5-2) and Southern Connecticut (4-3).

Stonehill finished with an overall mark of 27-20 during Boen’s eighth season at the helm, finishing third in the final Northeast-10 standings with a 17-13 league record after being picked to finish sixth in the conference pre-season coaches’ poll. The Chieftains have won 27 or more contests in five of the last six seasons.
