SMITHFIELD, R.I.-- Junior Billy Sittig (West Roxbury, Mass.) tossed a complete-game two-hit shutout and struck out 10 to lift Stonehill to a 4-0 Northeast-10 Conference baseball victory over Merrimack Monday afternoon at Bryant University’s Baseball Complex.

Sittig did not walk a batter in facing just two over the minimum in improving to 4-0 on the season for the Chieftains (9-6, 3-2 Northeast-10), as he lowered his earned run average to 1.55 for the year in the process. Stonehill plated the only run it would need in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by sophomore Tom Aldrich (New Canaan, Conn.), and the Chieftains extended their advantage to 3-0 in the seventh on an RBI single by freshman Ryan Halloran (Tyngsboro, Mass.), who then scored on a wild pitch. Stonehill closed out the scoring in the ninth when Halloran tripled and scored on a two-out single by senior Craig Audette (Raynham, Mass.). Halloran led a 10-hit Chieftain attack with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate, as five Stonehill players each collected one hit on the afternoon.

Sittig was touched for a pair of singles by the Warriors (1-12, 0-2 Northeast-10) on the day, as freshman Nick Karthas (Bothell, Wash.) singled in the first and junior Justin Murphy (South Easton, Mass.) added a seventh inning safety. Freshman Josh Sohn (West Simsbury, Conn.) suffered the setback on the mound for Merrimack, as he allowed seven hits and three runs while fanning six in seven innings of work.

Stonehill returns to action on Tuesday evening when the Chieftains take on American International in a Northeast-10 outing at Spillane Field in Wareham, Mass. beginning at 6:30 p.m., while Merrimack is scheduled to host Saint Anselm in a Northeast-10 contest on Tuesday afternoon in North Andover, Mass. at 3:30 p.m.
