FORT MYERS, Fla.-- Junior Sean Lawrence (New Rochelle, N.Y.) drove in three runs with a pair of hits while fellow junior Billy Sittig (West Roxbury, Mass.) scattered four hits over seven innings of work to lead Stonehill to a 12-1 non-league college baseball victory over LIU-C.W. Post as play continued at the Gene Cusic Classic Saturday afternoon at Terry Park.

The Chieftains (1-2) picked up their first win of the young season in jumping out to a 3-0 cushion through five innings of play, as RBI groundouts by junior Coley Lyons (West Roxbury, Mass.) and sophomore Tom Aldrich (New Canaan, Conn.) contributed two of those tallies and junior T.J. Piscatelli (Norfolk, Mass.) added the third by scoring on a passed ball. That score held up until the bottom of the sixth when the Pioneers (0-2) plated their lone run on freshman Chris Tipa’s (Huntington Station, N.Y.) first collegiate home run, and Stonehill iced matters with two runs each in the seventh and eighth frames before adding five insurance runs in the ninth. Sophomore Matt Vaughn’s (Bow, N.H.) sacrifice fly, coupled with a steal of home by senior Craig Audette (Raynham, Mass.), accounted for the Chieftain runs in the seventh, while a Lawrence RBI double and a run-scoring single by sophomore Max Vigliotti (Stamford, Conn.) extended Stonehill’s cushion to 7-1 through eight. A two-run triple by Lawrence, along with RBI triples off the bats of Lyons and Vigliotti as well as an RBI double by senior Tim Flynn (Clifton Park, N.Y.), closed out the scoring for the Chieftains.

Audette scored three runs and stole four bases in the triumph for Stonehill, as Vigliotti joined Lawrence with two hits each as part of an eight-hit attack for the Chieftains. Sittig allowed just four hits and struck out seven over seven innings of work to pick up the victory, as juniors Joe Breen (Swampscott, Mass.) and Brian Nelson (Greenville, R.I.) threw one scoreless inning each in relief. Tipa had two of LIU-C.W. Post’s five hits on the day, as freshman Kevin Gerard (Levittown, N.Y.) allowed just one earned run and struck out five in taking the loss on the mound in his collegiate debut for the Pioneers.

Stonehill squares off with Bridgeport in a non-league contest on Sunday morning at the Gene Cusic Classic beginning at 9:00 a.m., while LIU-C.W. Post will take on Quincy in a non-league contest as well on Sunday morning at Terry Park that also begins at 9:00 a.m.
