GAME #2 FINAL: STONEHILL 6, CALDWELL 2

FORT MYERS, Fla.-- The Stonehill baseball team swept a key non-league doubleheader from Caldwell on Friday evening by scores of 10-1 in the opener and 6-2 in the nightcap as play continued at the Gene Cusic Classic.

The Chieftains (5-4) overcame an early 1-0 deficit by breaking things open with a combined eight runs in the fourth and fifth frames of the opener, as a two-run single by sophomore Adam Pardo (Hanover, Mass.) and a bases-clearing safety off the bat of sophomore Tom Aldrich (New Canaan, Conn.) helped propel a 14-hit Stonehill attack. Senior Tim Flynn (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and junior T.J. Piscatelli (Norfolk, Mass.) each added three hits in the triumph for the Chieftains, as Piscatelli drove in three runs while sophomore Max Vigliotti (Stamford, Conn.) added two hits and a pair of RBI as well for the winners.

Junior Billy Sittig (West Roxbury, Mass.), the reigning Northeast-10 Conference Pitcher of the Week, went the distance on the mound for Stonehill to pick up his second victory of the young season, as he allowed just four hits and struck out seven. Sitting has allowed only two runs in his starts to date.

The two teams brought a scoreless tie into the middle innings of the nightcap, but Stonehill broke through with four runs in the top of the fifth keyed by an RBI single by Flynn and a two-run single by Vigliotti. The Cougars (1-3), who advanced to the 2004 NCAA Northeast Regional and swept a twinbill from the Chieftains at the 2004 Gene Cusic Classic, answered back with two in the bottom of the inning, but Vigliotti’s two-run single in the seventh provided a pair of insurance tallies for Stonehill, as he finished with a four-RBI performance. Flynn added three hits in the nightcap triumph for the Chieftains, as senior Billy McLane (Plymouth, N.H.) improved to 2-0 on the season with a complete-game effort on the mound, allowing seven hits and fanning seven in completing the sweep.

Stonehill, now 5-1 against NCAA Northeast Regional foes, closes out play at the Gene Cusic Classic on Saturday afternoon by taking on Teikyo Post in a non-league match-up at Terry Park beginning at 4:00 p.m.
