WALTHAM, Mass.-- Sophomore Steve Gath’s (Reading, Mass.) sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning capped a three-run rally that led Bentley to a 8-7 Northeast-10 Conference baseball victory over Stonehill Friday afternoon at DeFelice Field.

After allowing a pair of runs in the top of the 10th frame, the host Falcons (11-19, 8-10 Northeast-10) placed the tying runs on base on a leadoff double by senior Tim Bryant (Reading, Mass.) and a walk to sophomore Tom Haugh (Andover, Mass.). Junior Bill Dacier (Medway, Mass.) was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out, and senior Chris Methe’s (Longmeadow, Mass.) infield single plated Bryant to slice the Bentley deficit to 7-6. Junior GJ Vicente’s (Salem, N.H.) RBI single tied the contest, and Gath’s fly ball to right field plated Dacier with the game-winner for the Falcons.

The visiting Chieftains (17-12, 10-7 Northeast-10) took a 7-5 lead in the top of the 10th after loading the bases on consecutive singles by senior Tim Flynn (Clifton Park, N.Y.), freshman Ryan Halloran (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and sophomore Tom Aldrich (New Canaan, Conn.), and freshman David Fradette’s (Goffstown, N.H.) RBI single plated Flynn for the go-ahead run for Stonehill. Sophomore Adam Pardo’s (Hanover, Mass.) sacrifice fly scored Halloran for an insurance run for the visitors, setting up Bentley’s heroics in the bottom of the frame.

The Falcons snapped a 1-1 tie with three fifth inning runs courtesy of a two-run triple by sophomore Mike O’Connor (Wilbraham, Mass.) and a Bryant RBI single, but Stonehill answered back with four runs in the seventh to take a 5-4 cushion, as a two-run double by junior Coley Lyons (West Roxbury, Mass.) and RBI singles by senior Craig Audette (Raynham, Mass.) and sophomore Matt Vaughn (Bow, N.H.) highlighted the rally. Bentley evened matters in the bottom of the inning on a two-out home run by junior Chad Mastin (Newmarket, N.H.), and the Falcons nearly won the game in the bottom of the ninth, but a diving two-out catch by Flynn in center field sent the contest to the extra frame.

Bryant collected three of Bentley’s 11 hits on the afternoon, as Methe, Vicente and Gath each chipped in with two hits for the Falcons, while Vaughn rapped out three of Stonehill’s 12 hits on the day and both Flynn and Fradette each posted a pair of safeties for the Chieftains. Haugh picked up the win in relief for the hosts, as freshman Chris Dupay (Scotia, N.Y.), who threw a one-hit shutout against Stonehill earlier this month, allowed 11 hits and four earned runs in 9 1/3 innings of work. Junior Brian Nelson (Greenville, R.I.) suffered the setback on the mound in relief for the Chieftains, allowing two hits and three runs in 1 1/3 innings, as sophomore Nick SantaBarbara (Middleton, Mass.) allowed seven hits and four earned runs over eight innings of work while fanning eight in the start for Stonehill.

Stonehill hosts Southern Connecticut in a Northeast-10 twinbill on Saturday afternoon at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton, Mass. beginning at Noon, while Bentley hosts Assumption in a Northeast-10 doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at DeFelice Field that begins at Noon.
