BRIDGEWATER, Mass.-- Sophomore Nick SantaBarbara (Middleton, Mass.) tossed a complete-game three-hitter and struck out seven to pick up his third shutout of the season as Stonehill gained a split of a Northeast-10 Conference baseball doubleheader with Assumption by posting a 3-0 opening game triumph in games played Tuesday afternoon at Bridgewater State’s Alumni Park. In the nightcap, freshman Ryan Collins (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) scattered eight hits and fanned nine while allowing one run in going the distance in a 3-1 Greyhound victory.

An RBI double off the bat of sophomore Matt Vaughn (Bow, N.H.) in the third inning of the opener would prove to be the lone run that the Chieftains (24-18, 17-13 Northeast-10) and SantaBarbara would need, as Stonehill added a pair of insurance tallies in its last two at-bats on an RBI single by senior Craig Audette (Raynham, Mass.) in the eighth and an RBI single in the ninth by freshman David Fradette (Goffstown, N.H.), and SantaBarbara took care of the rest for the Chieftains to improve to 7-2 on the season. Audette and freshman Ryan Halloran (Tyngsboro, Mass.) each had two hits as part of an eight-hit Stonehill attack in the opener, as senior Brandon Brower (Middleboro, Mass.) went the distance on the mound for Assumption (11-28, 10-18 Northeast-10) in the first contest, fanning three in falling to 2-7 on the season.

The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 first inning lead in the nightcap when senior Chris Colabello (Milford, Mass.), who saw his 17-game hitting streak end in the opener, reached on an error and scored on an RBI double by junior Tyler Vivian (Ashland, Mass.). The Chieftains evened matters in the fourth when junior Coley Lyons (West Roxbury, Mass.) walked, stole second and scored on an RBI single by senior Tim Flynn (Clifton Park, N.Y.), but Assumption plated the decisive runs in the fifth on a Colabello RBI double and a run-scoring single by senior Andy Barlow (Milford, Mass.) to close out the scoring.

Collins improved to 3-4 on the season with the win on the mound for the Greyhounds, who collected four hits and took advantage of a pair of errors, while Flynn went 4-for-4 and stole three bases in the setback for Stonehill, which also received two more hits from Audette in the nightcap. Junior Brian Nelson (Greenville, R.I.) allowed just four hits and two earned runs in six innings while striking out eight in suffering the setback on the mound for the Chieftains, falling to 2-4 on the season.

Stonehill will be seeded third in the 2005 Northeast-10 Conference Championships and will host sixth-seeded Saint Anselm in a first round league playoff contest on Wednesday afternoon at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton, Mass. beginning at 3:00 p.m. Today’s doubleheader concluded Assumption’s season.
