SMITHFIELD, R.I.-- Sophomore Tom Aldrich (New Canaan, Conn.) snapped a sixth-inning tie with an RBI single that propelled Stonehill to a 5-3 Northeast-10 Conference baseball victory over Assumption Wednesday afternoon in a contest played at Bryant University’s Baseball 3Complex.

The Chieftains (7-4, 1-0 Northeast-10) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in their first two at-bats, as a sacrifice fly by senior Tim Flynn (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and an RBI single by junior Coley Lyons (West Roxbury, Mass.), coupled with a wild pitch, staked Stonehill to that advantage. The Greyhounds (1-9, 0-1 Northeast-10) evened matters with three runs in the top of the sixth, as junior Matt Cavallaro (West Haven, Conn.) plated a pair with a two-run triple and then tied the game on a wild pitch, but Aldrich gave Stonehill the lead for good in the bottom of the frame with his RBI safety and senior Craig Audette (Raynham, Mass.) added an insurance tally with a sacrifice fly that closed out the scoring.

Lyons collected two of Stonehill’s seven hits on the day, as junior Billy Sittig (West Roxbury, Mass.) picked up the win on the mound for the Chieftains, allowing just two hits and fanning seven to improve to 3-0 on the season. Junior Joe Breen (Swampscott, Mass.) added two scoreless innings of relief for the winners, while fellow junior Brian Nelson (Greenville, R.I.) retired the side in order in the ninth to collect his second save.

Cavallaro had two of Assumption’s three hits on the day, as five Greyhound errors contributed to three unearned runs for Stonehill. Senior Brandon Brower (Middleboro, Mass.) went seven innings, allowing seven hits and a pair of earned runs while striking out five, in suffering the setback for Assumption on the mound.

Stonehill travels to Waltham, Mass. on Thursday afternoon to take on rival Bentley in a Northeast-10 outing at DeFelice Field that begins at 3:00 p.m., while Assumption heads to West Haven, Conn. on Friday afternoon to square off with New Haven in a non-league match-up that also begins at 3:00 p.m.
