Skyhawks post ninth-straight top three finish to close in on decade of excellence
EASTON, Mass. (June 4, 2013) – Three-time defending Northeast-10 Conference Presidents’ Cup Champions Stonehill College has finished third in the final 2012-13 Presidents’ Cup standings the Conference announced at its NE-10 Awards Dinner as part of the Conference’s end of the year meetings being held at Sea Crest Beach Hotel Monday night.
It marks the ninth straight year Stonehill has finished in the top three of the final NE-10 Presidents’ Cup standings, which includes four Presidents’ Cup titles, having won three straight Cups from 2009-10 through 2011-12. The Skyhawks, who were fifth in the Presidents’ Cup standings after the fall season and fourth at the conclusion of the winter season, finished the year with 167 points. Adelphi University captured its first Presidents’ Cup in just its fourth year as a Northeast-10 member with 177, followed by eight-time champions Bentley University in second place with 171.5 points. The University of Massachusetts Lowell finished fourth in its final year as an NE-10 member (154.5 points) and the University of New Haven rounds out the top five (150.5).

Despite its streak of three-straight Presidents’ Cup titles coming to an end, Stonehill led all Northeast-10 member institutions with four Conference championships over the 2012-13 academic year. Stonehill’s men’s and women’s cross country teams swept the NE-10 Championships in October for the second straight year, marking the women’s’ 11th title and sixth overall for the men, the men’s indoor track & field program won its first NE-10 Championship in program history in February and this spring, the women’s tennis team captured a fourth NE-10 crown. The women’s tennis and lacrosse programs both earned NCAA Tournament bids during the spring season, while senior All-American Corey Thomas (Brookline, Mass./BC High) and sophomore All-American Nick Staley (Medway, Mass./BC High) both qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships, giving Stonehill seven NCAA appearances for the year. Senior Dana Borges (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) was named the inaugural NE-10 Man of the Year at last night’s Conference awards dinner, and senior Emily Dolan (La Crosse, Wis./Aquinas) placed seventh in the Cacchione Cup competition at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) National Championships in May.
With 20 intercollegiate sports, Stonehill boasts one of the top athletic and academic programs in the country. In addition to its nine-straight top three NE-10 Presidents’ Cup finishes, Stonehill has received the NCAA Division II Presidents' Award for Academic Achievement each of the first two years if the program's existence of honoring programs with an Academic Success Rate (ASR) of 90-percent or better. The Skyhawks have earned a 97% Academic Success Ranking (ASR) by the NCAA, which considers the academic success rate of the institution based on the graduation rate of student-athletes, good for fifth among all NCAA Division II institutions, with nine Skyhawk teams receiving a perfect rating of 100%. The Skyhawks are also ranked sixth in the National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) Power Rankings used to assess the academic and athletic standards of all NCAA and NAIA athletic programs.
