Taunton, Mass., native and recent Stonehill graduate honored at NE-10 Awards Dinner
FALMOUTH, Mass. (June 3, 2013) – Stonehill College ice hockey captain Dana Borges (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) has been named the inaugural recipient of the Northeast-10 Conference’s Man of the Year award, as selected by the Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) Council and announced at the NE-10 Awards Dinner as part of the Conference’s end of the year meetings being held at Sea Crest Beach Hotel tonight.
Borges is the first Stonehill student-athlete to earn a major NE-10 end of the year award since former cross country runner John Monahan, ’00, was named the Conference’s Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2000. Borges was among three finalists for Man of the Year honors along with Bentley University senior men's soccer student-athlete Weston Zeiner and Saint Michael's men's tennis standout Chris Moskal. The NE-10 Man of the Year Award honors senior student-athletes for their collective collegiate achievements in service, leadership, athletics and academics.
“To receive the inaugural Northeast-10 Man of the Year Award is one of the most prestigious recognitions I have received during my time at Stonehill,” said Borges. “I would like to thank the Stonehill community for all it has done for me in my four years. Whether it was on the ice, in the classroom, or as a leader, I strived to make a positive contribution to the College. The true awards were seeing the efforts of my teammates and myself to make this positive impact.”
Borges is a two-time Capital One Academic All-District At Large team selection and Northeast-10 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award winner for ice hockey. He was a semifinalist for the Joe Concannon Award, presented by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston to the top American-born college hockey player in New England playing at the NCAA Division II or III level and earned All-Northeast-10 Conference first team honors for the first time this winter.

Borges recently graduated with a 3.75 cumulative grade point average as a criminology major at Stonehill, with a political science minor. He was named the Edward E. Martin Male Scholar-Athlete Award and Fr. John McCarthy, C.S.C., Leadership Award recipient at the College's annual Senior Student-Athlete Dinner and is a three-time NE-10 Academic All-Conference selection and three-time St. Thomas Aquinas, Patron Saint of Students, medalist for having the highest cumulative grade point average on the team.
"Dana is the true epitome of a student-athlete,” said Brendan J. Sullivan, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Stonehill. “He is a talented individual who has chosen to apply himself and excel in the classroom and the ice rink, as well as in both our campus and greater community. We are thrilled to have watched him compete for the past four years and even prouder today with this honor, for which he is a most deserving selection."
Borges, a 2009-10 NE-10 All-Rookie team performer, led the NE-10 in scoring with 37 points during his senior season as he collected 15 goals and 22 assists. He recorded at least one point in 18 of 26 games during his senior season and registered multiple points in 11 of those contests. He also led the NE-10 in assists, power play points (17) and power play goals (seven), while finishing eighth nationally in Division II and III for scoring and 13th in assists and power play goals. Borges concluded his career with 29 goals and 58 assists for 87 points in 100 career games played for the Skyhawks. He recently signed a professional contract to play for Evry Peaux Rouges of France’s Division 2 League.

Leahy, ice hockey head coach at Stonehill. He is very
deserving of the NE-10 Man of the Year award and it is a great way
for him to finish a distinguished college career in the classroom,
the community, and on the ice. Dana has accomplished so much in his
four years at Stonehill and it all has to do with his want and
desire to make a difference and to be the best that he could, not
only for himself, but for his classmates, his college, and his
teammates. Dana has set a great example of what a student
athlete here at Stonehill and within the NE-10 should
be. Winning and being successful in his pursuits has always
been important to Dana, but making sure that he leaves a lasting
impression for the betterment of his college and those that follow
is what really matters to him the most.”
Borges, an Edward H. Sutherland Honor Society member, completed an internship with the Public Defender's Office in Brockton, Mass., during his junior year as well as the Department of Justice in Boston in the summer of 2012. He and his ice hockey teammates are active with Team IMPACT and he has also served as coach with the junior varsity hockey team at Coyle & Cassidy. Borges is the ice hockey team's representative with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), serving as chairperson for the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA)/SAAC leadership forum held at the College this spring.

Stonehill ice hockey finished its season with an 11-15-0 record overall, including a 6-5-0 mark in the Northeast-10 to finish fourth in the Conference standings and earn its 14th-straight tournament appearance.
With 20 intercollegiate sports, Stonehill boasts one of the top athletic and academic programs in the country. The Skyhawks, who compete in the NCAA Division II Northeast-10 Conference, has finished in the top three in the final Presidents’ Cup standings nine straight years, winning the Cup four times, including a streak of three-straight from 2009-10 through 2011-12. This prestigious award is given to the top performing athletic school in the Northeast-10, across all sports and seasons. Stonehill has received the NCAA Division II Presidents' Award for Academic Achievement each of the first two years if the program's existence of honoring programs with an Academic Success Rate (ASR) of 90-percent or better. The Skyhawks have earned a 97% Academic Success Ranking (ASR) by the NCAA, which considers the academic success rate of the institution based on the graduation rate of student-athletes, good for fifth among all NCAA Division II institutions, with nine Skyhawk teams receiving a perfect rating of 100%. In addition, the Skyhawks are ranked sixth in the National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) Power Rankings used to assess the academic and athletic standards of all NCAA and NAIA athletic programs.
