Seniors candidates for top individual honor by Northeast-10 Conference

EASTON, Mass. (June 5, 2011) – Seniors Emily Rousseau (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) and Angelo Bruno (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) have been named Stonehill College’s institutional candidates for the Northeast-10 Conference Female and Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards. The two award winners will be announced at the NE-10’s end of the year banquet on Tuesday, June 7, in Providence, R.I.

Rousseau, also a finalist for the NE-10’s Woman of the Year award, is a two-time Capital One Academic All-District I selection who recently graduated with a 3.62 cumulative grade point average while majoring in finance at Stonehill. She earned honorable mention All-America honors from the State Farm/Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Coaches' All-America program this past season and is a three-time All-Northeast-10 performer for the Skyhawks. Rousseau was named the College’s Fr. William Gartland, CSC, Award winner at Stonehill’s Senior Student-Athlete Awards Dinner.

Rousseau led the women’s basketball team to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances and one trip to the NE-10 Championship game over her career. She earned first team All-NE-10 honors as a junior when she was also a Daktronics second team All-East Region honoree and collected second team All-Conference honors as a sophomore and senior. Rousseau has been inducted into the Delta Mu Delta, Lambda Epsilon Sigma and Financial Management Association honor societies. She has volunteered at New England Sinai Adult Day Care, while also being involved in the Student Leadership Academy and Lifeskills programs at the College. Rousseau has earned Division II Athletic Director's Association (ADA) Academic Achievement Award recognition and has been named to the NE-10 Commissioner's and Athletic Director's Honor Rolls every semester.

Rousseau started 17 of the 18 games she played for Stonehill during her senior season and led the Skyhawks with 16.8 points per game to go with 3.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.3 steals in 32.8 minutes per game. Rousseau led the team in free-throw shooting, converting at 84.3-percent (59-70), including a streak of 35-straight early in the season. Rousseau surpassed a pair of 1,000-point milestones over her collegiate career, becoming the 25^th player in Stonehill history to net 1,000 points during a contest at Merrimack College on November 23. She also surpassed 1,000 points for her career during a win at Southern New Hampshire University as a junior. In 91 games played in three seasons at Stonehill, Rousseau totaled 1,176 points, 294 rebounds, 347 assists and 107 steals. Including her 23 appearances (16 starts) at Maine in 2007-08, she has totaled 1,363 points, 363 rebounds, 393 assists and 124 steals in 114 career games played.

Bruno, the Edward E. Martin Scholar-Athlete and Fr. John McCarthy, CSC, Leadership Award winner, recently graduated with a 3.40 grade point average as an accounting major at Stonehill. He was named to the Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference team as a junior and has been named to the NE-10 Commissioner’s and Athletic Director’s honor roll multiple semesters. Bruno led the baseball team to a pair of NE-10 Tournament appearances, earning MVP honors in leading the Skyhawks to the 2010 tournament championship. Stonehill also earned a bid to the 2010 NCAA Tournament.

Bruno earned All-NE-10 honors for the second-straight year this spring after being named to the first team as a junior. He started all 48 games for Stonehill this season and hit .273 (47-for-172) with 28 runs scored, a team-best 12 doubles, two triples, team-high eight home runs, 38 RBI and six stolen bases. Bruno slugged .506 and posted a .362 on-base percentage while committing just three errors in 395 chances (.992 fielding percentage) at first base.

Bruno, a consensus All-East Region selection as a junior, was a preseason NCBWA All-Region selection and named to the Tino Martinez Award preseason watch list. He started 170 of the 177 games he has played over his career, hitting .264 (163-for-618) with 113 runs scored, 36 doubles, seven triples, 23 home runs, 115 RBI and 22 stolen bases. He was named MVP of the 2010 NE-10 Championships, also earning All-Tournament team honors for the event.
