A 1985 graduate
of Stonehill College and a resident of providence, R.I.,
Mary Anne Walsh finished her basketball career
with 1,322 points, sixth on the all-time Stonehill list. Her No. 20
jersey was the third one to be retired. In addition to her
basketball exploits, Mary Anne was a superb softball player for
coach Fred Petti. She was All-Conference in 1985 and the NE-8
Player of the Year in that same season. She was also named a
second-team All-American.
During her
basketball career, her Lady Chieftains won 81 games, while losing
only 34 and capturing the NE-8 championship in 1983. Her team also
received a bid to the NCAA New England Regionals in 1983.
On the softball
field, Walsh’s teams had just as much success, posting an
82-32 record spanning four years, winning the MAIAW State
Championship in 1982 and 1983, and closing out her career in the
ECAC Tournament in 1985. Walsh was an outstanding contributor to
this team, batting .388 with seven doubles, six triples and two
home runs.
