Paul Sincero of Bristol, R.I., may have been a
man ahead of his time. A forward on those early Stonehill teams
(1950s), Paul was a scorer when scoring was a rarity. He became
Stonehill’s first 1,000-point scorer -- there are now
19 members. Paul finished his career with 1,366 points. Boston Red
Sox General Manager Lou Gorman who was also from Rhode Island and a
teammate of Sincero, said of the inductee: “Paul helped us
build credibility as a college so we could compete with established
colleges. Paul helped us develop a sense of pride. If we had to win
a game, we gave the ball to Paul.” Using his one-hand set
shot style, Sincero scored 20 points in a 64-58 victory over Bryant
College and had 22 points in a 69-62 loss to St. Anselm College. He
set the early Stonehill record for most points in a game with 34 in
1950 against Curry College. In the 1951-52 season, Sincero scored a
New England Coastal Conference Championship.
A co-captain his senior year, Sincero was named All Catholic and
All New England. Paul has retired as a vice president from Fram
Allied Signal Co., which included Fram Filters, Bendix Brakes and
Autolite Spark Plugs. He does considerable volunteer work in
Bristol, R.I., where he makes his home. Paul says Stonehill is very
responsible for his success in the business world. “I was a
strong math student, and the small classes at Stonehill helped me.
I lived with my family at home while going to Stonehill and that
helped my study habits. After my freshman year, I had the
opportunity to transfer to Maryland, but decided if I was going to
make it after college Stonehill is where I had to stay.” Paul
remembers those early games played at Brockton’s old Armory,
now being converted into a Boys & Girls Club. He was a member
of the Stonehill baseball team and was an excellent player.
