Michael Allocco, Stonehill Class of 1973, is
regarded as the best basketball player to ever play at the College.
An outstanding outside shooter and excellent rebounder, Allocco
established ever offensive record of note at Stonehill during the
early 1970s. The first All-American in Stonehill history, his
number 24 jersey is the first to be retired in Stonehill's
history.
Allocco finished his career with a
school-record 2,399 points, without the benefit of the
three-point shot (which wouldn't be adopted in NCAA basketball
until 13 years after his graduation), for a four-year average of
23.8 points per game - both of which still rank first all-time in
Stonehill men's basketball history. Allocco also finished his
career with 1,150 career rebounds, making him one of just a handful
of players with over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in Stonehill
history.
Allocco was a three-time
All-America selection, in addition to being named All-Conference in
his sophomore year and MVP of the Conference in his junior and
senior campaigns. He set a school record, that also still stands to
this day, with 52 points in a 124-90 victory over Norwich in
1971.
Allocco played with two other
members of the Stonehill Hall of Fame, Henry Jackson, '73 and Howie
Bain, '74, and the trio led Stonehill to the first two NCAA
Tournaments in school history in 1971 and 1973. Allocco was
Stonehill’s first-ever basketball player to be selected
in professional basketball’s drafts as he was selected as the
6th selection of the Baltimore Bullets (NBA) and the fourth round
selection of the Virginia Squires (ABA).
