EASTON, Mass. (February 4, 2020) – Stonehill College junior Sam Curtin has been tabbed Northeast-10 Conference Women's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence award winner, as announced by the league on Tuesday.
On Monday, 10 Stonehill student-athletes, this number led the Conference, were named to the Fall NE10 Academic All-Conference teams, including Curtin. Curtin earned her second Academic All-Conference honor after receiving her first last season as a sophomore. This is her first Sport Excellence Award, the women's cross country's fifth honor, and Stonehill's 32nd award.
Curtin, who is majoring in philosophy and minoring in economics, has culminated a 3.79 GPA, while competing in cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field for the Skyhawks.
The junior posted two top-five finishes this season out of five meets, including a career-best finish at the NCAA Division II East Region Cross Country Championships at Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in early November. The Plymouth, Massachusetts native was named USTFCCCA East Region Athlete of the Year following a first-place finish at the Regionals. Curtin was the fourth Skyhawk to earn the East Region title in five years. With the individual title, Curtin earned her third cross country U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-East Region honor.
Prior to the meet, she placed third at the NE10 Championships at Jamesville Beach State Park in Jamesville, New York for her third cross country NE10 All-Conference honor. Curtin competed in her second NCAA Division II Cross Country Championship and finished a career-best 116th at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento, California.
With the women's 11th-straight NE10 Cross Country Championship under their belt, the Skyhawks have won 13-straight Championships including cross country, indoor, and outdoor track & field. Over the past 19 NE10 Championships, Stonehill women have won 18.
The Plymouth, Massachusetts native has seen her name on the Dean's list, the NE10 Academic Honor Roll with both Academic Excellence and Academic Distinction, and the Athletic Director's Honor Roll six times.

Last summer, she was selected to Stonehill Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program. Along with Jessica Vining'19 worked with Edward McGushin, Professor of Philosophy, on Michel Foucault's (1926-1984) Unwritten History of Dreams, Dreaming, and Dream Interpretation. Michel Foucault was one of the most influential philosophers of the twentieth century. In this project, the team looked at his discussion of the role of dream interpretation in philosophy and at the inception of psychoanalytic theory. The goal was to fill this gap and produce an article for publication in a scholarly journal. In this project, Vining and Curtin helped provide a commentary on Foucault's writings on dreams and dreaming. The group aimed to present their findings in an undergraduate journal of philosophy or at a regional conference.
Through seven seasons of competition, Curtin has thus far totaled four NE10 All-Conference honors, four USTFCCCA All-East Region accolades and a Division II ADA Academic Achievement Award.
With 23 intercollegiate sports after the announcement of the addition of women's swimming (starting in the fall of 2020) and women's ice hockey (starting in 2021-22), Stonehill boasts one of the top athletic and academic programs in the country. Stonehill has won the Northeast-10 Conference Presidents' Cup five times, all coming within the last 14 years. The Skyhawks have received the NCAA Division II Presidents' Award for Academic Achievement each of the first nine years of the program's existence of honoring institutions with an Academic Success Rate (ASR) of 90-percent or better. Stonehill has earned a 95% Academic Success Ranking (ASR) by the NCAA, which considers the academic success rate of the institution based on the graduation rate of student-athletes, good for tenth among all NCAA Division II institutions, with nine Skyhawk teams receiving a perfect rating of 100%. Stonehill won five NE10 Championships during the 2018-19 academic year, with nine programs earning NCAA Division II Championship bids and the equestrian program capturing its tenth Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone 1, Region 4 championship.
