College inducts three former standout student-athletes, national champion head coach and long-time local sports writer

Stonehill's most recent Athletic Hall of Fame class includes Brockton Enterprise sports writer Jim Fenton, former women's lacrosse head coach Michael Daly, Michelle Massa '94, a two-sport student-athlete in equestrian and women's tennis, Caitlin Gleason '08, an All-America field hockey student-athlete and Keith Gill '09 an All-America cross country and track & field runner. With its five new Hall of Fame members, Stonehill's total inductees since the first ceremony in 1989 have increased to 142, including 107 former individual student-athletes.

Massa, a native of Cohasset, Massachusetts, was a two-sport student-athlete at Stonehill with the equestrian and women's tennis programs. Massa found her perfect fit when she transferred to Stonehill following her freshman year at Boston College. She was a part of two straight Northeast-10 Conference championships in women's tennis. Individually, she captured a pair of NE-10 championships at No. 3 singles as a sophomore and junior. Massa opted to stop playing tennis after her junior year when she participated in the College's study abroad program in the fall before returning to the equestrian team for the spring.

Equestrian was a complete bonus to Massa when coming to Stonehill and she helped in building up a new varsity program at the College into the upper echelon within the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association over her three years. She was part of two IHSA Zone 1 Championship winning teams, beating out big established programs from Colgate, Brown and UConn.

The Equestrian team competed at the IHSA National Championships her junior and senior year and she also qualified to compete at nationals as an individual for walk-trot-canter equitation over those two years as well. She earned Reserve Champion honors at nationals, hosted by the University of Colorado-Loveland as a junior, before claiming the individual National Champion the following year at Texas A&M to cap her collegiate riding career. George Morris - one of the preeminent equitation judges in the world - chose her as the winner of her class after a ride off.

Gleason, a native of New Boston, New Hampshire, who attended Goffstown High School, was a standout member of the field hockey program as it began to emerge as a Northeast-10 Conference and national contender on a yearly basis.

Gleason was a four-time All-Northeast-10 Conference selection over her career, earning first team honors as a junior when she helped guide Stonehill to a second-straight NCAA Tournament bid and the NE-10 regular season championship. She earned All-America status from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) as a junior and senior, with first team honors her junior year.

Gleason still ranks second all-time in program history with 132 points and 53 career goals, including 16 game-winning goals, while her 26 career assists rank third all-time in program history. She also ranks among the program's all-time single-season top tens for goals, and points, with her career-best 39 points and 17 goals in 2004 both ranking seventh to this day.

Gleason helped lead Stonehill to a pair of Northeast-10 championships over her career, adding the 2005 tournament title to its 2006 regular season crown. The Skyhawks made NCAA Tournament appearances in 2005 and 2006 - reaching the national semifinals for the first time her sophomore season.

Gill, a native of Brockton, Massachusetts, who attended Brockton High School, is one of the most decorated runners in the rich history of the cross country and track & field programs. Gill was the first Stonehill runner to earn All-America honors for cross country and indoor and outdoor track & field and remains the only male student-athlete to have accomplished the feat to this day.

Gill led Stonehill to a pair of Northeast-10 and NCAA East Regional Championships in cross country as a freshman and junior, with the Skyhawks finishing as runners up the other two years. He earned All-Northeast-10 Conference honors, collecting first team honors with a fifth place finish in 2006, when he would go on to post an All-East Region performance with a third place finish at the regional and then post an All-America finish at the NCAA Championships with his 35th place finish.

Gill, the 2008 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) Indoor Athlete of the Year, is the first Stonehill track & field athlete to win a New England Championship when he captured the indoor 1000-meter run in 2:24.73. He would go on to earn All-America honors for the indoor mile with a fifth place finish in 2007.  Gill also earned All-America honors for Outdoor Track & Field with his seventh place finish in the 1500-meter run in 2006.

Gill still holds school records for the indoor 800-meters (1:52.00), 1000m (2:24.73) and mile (4:03.43). He was captured NE-10 indoor championships for the 3000m and as part of the 4x800m relay.

Michael Daly (center) was inducted into the Hall of Fame by women's lacrosse senior All-American Cara Corvino and O'Keefe.

Daly served as head coach of the Stonehill women's lacrosse program for the first nine years of its existence from 1999 through 2007. He built a program from the ground up which would enjoy a run of unprecedented success on the field.

Daly earned Division II National Coach of the Year honors three times over his Stonehill career in 1999, 2003 and 2005, leading the program to 140-27 (.838) overall record in those first nine years of the program's history, including a near-flawless 81-1 mark in the Northeast-10. Daly was named the NE-10 Coach of the Year six times over his nine seasons in Easton, including a run of five straight from 2002-2006.

Stonehill earned the first five NCAA Tournament bids in program history under Daly - all national semifinal appearances. He led the program to the first two NCAA National Championships in school history in 2003 and 2005, the latter of which Stonehill was a perfect 21-0 for the only undefeated season in school history, while also making a finals appearance in 2002.

Both National Championship teams have been inducted to the Stonehill and Northeast-10 Halls of Fame, along with Katie Lambert '03, the current women's lacrosse head coach, who was a three-time NE-10 Player of the Year and IWLCA National Player of the Year. He joins six of his former student-athletes in the Stonehill Hall of Fame, having coached 31 All-Americans, including a pair of National Players of the Year, eight NE-10 Players of the Year and a pair of CoSIDA Academic All-Americans.

Daly led Stonehill to nine straight Northeast-10 regular season championships, recording eight undefeated seasons in Conference play, including a streak of 68-straight NE-10 wins upon his departure to become assistant coach at New Hampshire, his alma mater, in 2007. Stonehill won eight straight NE-10 Tournament championships from 2000-07.

There have not been many members of the Stonehill Athletic Hall of Fame who went through their four years at the College without meeting Brockton Enterprise sports writer Jim Fenton.

Fenton has been a member of The Enterprise's sports staff since 1981, where he has covered the Southeastern Massachusetts college sports scene, including Stonehill College, for the last 31 years.  Additionally, Fenton has been The Enterprise's beat writer for both the Boston Celtics and the National Basketball Association since 1985.

Fenton writes a twice-weekly college notes column that routinely features the successful stories of Stonehill athletics, its student-athletes and coaches, in addition to his game coverage for the paper. His coverage of Stonehill athletics hasn't been confined to just Easton, having traveled to cover its teams at Northeast-10 and NCAA Championships across the northeast.

Fenton received the Northeast-10 Conference's Dick Lipe Media Award in 2004, as well as the Monahan & Wallace Media Award from ECAC-SIDA in 2000. He was named by the New England College Athletic Conference as its Sports Media Person of the Year in 1996, has received Springfield College's News Media Recognition Award and received the Crimson & White Award from Bridgewater State University in 2013. His work has been recognized by the New England Newpaper & Press Association as well as the New England Associated Press News Executives Association.

With 20 intercollegiate sports, Stonehill boasts one of the top athletic and academic programs in the country. While finishing in the top three of the Northeast-10 Conference Presidents' Cup standings for overall athletic performance 12 straight years, the Skyhawks have received the NCAA Division II Presidents' Award for Academic Achievement each of the first five years of the program's existence of honoring institutions with an Academic Success Rate (ASR) of 90-percent or better. Stonehill has earned a 96% Academic Success Ranking (ASR) by the NCAA two straight years, which considers the academic success rate of the institution based on the graduation rate of student-athletes, good for fifth among all NCAA Division II institutions, with 12 Skyhawk teams receiving a perfect rating of 100%. In addition, the Skyhawks are ranked third in the National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) Power Rankings for Division II used to assess the academic and athletic standards of all NCAA and NAIA athletic programs. Stonehill has also been selected as the host of the 2016 NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championships at W.B. Mason Stadium November 18-20.
