Borges earns second Academic All-District I at large selection, while Martin receives honors for first time

EASTON, Mass. (May 21, 2013) – Stonehill College seniors Dana Borges (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) and Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien) have both been selected to the Capital One Academic All-District I Men’s At Large Team, as selected by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) members in Division II from the East Region.
Borges earns the recognition for the second straight year, while Martin collects the honors for the first time with their spots on the Division II Men’s At Large first team and the duo are now eligible for Academic All-America honors, voted on by members of the CoSIDA Academic All-America committee members, to be announced later this month. The men's at large team category includes student-athletes from the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.

Borges, a finalist for the inaugural Northeast-10 Conference Man of the Year Award, earns Capital One Academic All-District honors for the second straight year and it marks the third such award for the Stonehill ice hockey program, with Matt Curran '08 selected to the College Division second team in 2008. Borges graduated over the weekend with a 3.72 cumulative grade point average as a criminology major at the College, with a political science minor. He was named the Edward E. Martin Male Scholar-Athlete Award and Fr. John McCarthy, C.S.C., Leadership Award recipient at Stonehill’s annual Senior Student-Athlete Dinner last month and is a two-time NE-10 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award winner for ice hockey. He has earned NE-10 Academic All-Conference honors three straight years and is a three-time St. Thomas Aquinas, Patron Saint of Students, medalist for having the highest cumulative grade point average on the team.
Borges earned All-Northeast-10 Conference honors for the first time in his career this past winter with his first team selection. The 2009-10 NE-10 All-Rookie team performer led the Conference in scoring with 37 points as he collected 15 goals and 22 assists. Borges recorded at least one point in 18 of 26 games during his senior season and registered multiple points in 11 of those contests. He was named a semifinalist for the Joe Concannon Award, presented annually by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston to the top American-born college hockey player in New England playing at the NCAA Division II or III level. Borges also led the NE-10 in assists, power play points (17) and power play goals (seven), while finishing eighth nationally in Division II and III for scoring and 13th in assists and power play goals.
Borges, an Edward H. Sutherland Honor Society member, completed an internship with the Public Defender’s Office in Brockton, Mass., during his junior year as well as the Department of Justice in Boston in the summer of 2012. He and his ice hockey teammates are active with Team IMPACT and he has also served as coach with the junior varsity hockey team at Coyle & Cassidy. Borges is the ice hockey team’s representative with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), serving as chairperson for the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA)/SAAC leadership forum held at the College this spring. He concluded his career with 29 goals and 58 assists for 87 points in 100 career games played for the Skyhawks.
Stonehill ice hockey finished its season with an 11-15-0 record overall, including a 6-5-0 mark in the Northeast-10 to finish fourth in the Conference standings and earn its 14th-straight tournament appearance.

Martin earns Academic All-District honors for the first time, marking the program’s second selection over the past four years as he joins former teammate Michael Mashkevich, ’10, who went on to earn third team Academic All-America honors in 2010. Martin graduated over the weekend with a 3.68 cumulative GPA as an accounting major at the College. He is a two-time St. Thomas Aquinas medal winner for having the highest GPA on the team and earned NE-10 Academic All-Conference honors as a junior. Martin is a Beta Gamma Sigma National Honor Society member and the men’s tennis team’s SAAC representative.
Martin is a five-time All-Northeast-10 performer after earning third team All-Conference honors at No. 5 singles for the second time in his career this spring. He is also a three-time All-Northeast-10 doubles performer for Stonehill over his career and was named to the NE-10’s All-Rookie Team in 2010. Martin was a combined 32-20 for singles and doubles play this past season, posting a 14-7 overall singles record, including 13-6 in dual match play with a 7-1 mark in the NE-10. He also recorded a 17-13 doubles record with four different teammates this season.
Martin finished his career with a combined career 101-61 (.624) record in singles and doubles play. He posted a 46-29 (.613) record over his four years in singles play, including 22-10 (.688) in NE-10 matches, to go with a 55-32 (.632) doubles clip, going 24-12 (.667) in the NE-10. He has earned NE-10 Commissioner's and Athletic Director's Honor Roll status every semester at the College.
Stonehill men’s tennis finished the 2012-13 season with a 15-9 overall record, including a 6-3 clip in NE-10 play. The Skyhawks are ranked tenth in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional rankings and made their 14th NE-10 Tournament appearance this spring.
Stonehill captured the Northeast-10 Conference Presidents’ Cup for the third-straight year and fourth time overall at the conclusion of the 2011-12 academic year, Stonehill finished ranked 68th in the final Learfield Sports Directors Cup standings which recognizes overall athletic achievement in NCAA championships. Stonehill has received the NCAA Division II Presidents’ Award for Academic Achievement each of the first two years if the program’s existence of honoring programs with an Academic Success Rate (ASR) of 90-percent or better. The athletics program is also ranked sixth in the National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) Power Rankings used to assess the academic and athletic standards of all NCAA and NAIA athletic programs, marking a fourth straight top ten placement.
